Arles / Barbegal (France)

Bend in the conduit

The conduit of the Arles aqueduct where it turns sharply west to run along the crest of the Chaînon de la Pène. The four layers visible in the centre are the limestone bedrock with the excavation for the Barbegal mill at left; a set of large limestone blocks that probably belong to the first phase of bridge A; a concrete conduit wall, and the sinter deposit in the aqueduct. The sinter deposit is about 1 m high and 20 cm thick at the base and indicates a high water level in the conduit
