The Great Drain

The Great Drain - early 5th c BCE - with a global cross-section of 1 x 1 m, had sidewalls of polygonal
masonry, a tiled bottom and large covering slabs. Its purpose was to convey waste from the
buildings of the Agora and rainwater from the surrounding hills to the Eridanos River to the north.
Its main channel crossed the west side of the Agora from south to north beneath the paving of
the “West Street”.
