Rediscovered

In search for more water for the Athenians, workmen began in 1847 digging at Agios Demetrios church
in Ambelokipi. Their goal was to increase the flow of what they thought was a natural spring. They
discovered that the water was coming from an underground aqueduct: the aqueduct of Hadrian.
