Caesarea (Israel)

Regulating the water flow

The eye catcher of the Nahal Taninim dam, the start of the Low level aqueduct of Caesarea,
is the reproduction of its regulation facility. The dam in the Taninim and Ada rivers was built in
the Late Roman period to raise the water in order to supply additional water. During the Byzantine
period (4 - 7 c CE) six flour mills were dug near the dam, operated by power of water that reached
them in channels. During the Ottoman period (16 - 19 c CE) the dam was restored and seven
new flour mills were constructed nearby.
