Roma Vecchia-
  Porta Maggiore

View into the channel

A view into the channel of the Aqua Claudia, 1.2 m wide and 1.9 m high, so there was ample room
for maintenance (removing deposits and incrustations) and repairs. The channel was lined with
a watertight coating called opus signinum. Ashby (1935) noted piles of deposits along the arcade at every tenth arch suggesting a manhole on top of the Aqua Anio Novus, for easy access.
