Aqua Virgo

Arch of Claudius

A travertine arch by which the Aqua Virgo crossed one of the side streets east of via Lata, rebuilt
in monumental form by caesar Claudius in 46ad, as present at Via del Nazareno 14. In 51/52 ad the
Senate honored caesar Claudius by erecting a triumphal arch in the neighborhood of Palazzo
Sciarra, to commemorate his victory over Britain. This was a monumental rebuilding of the an
Aqua Virgo arch at Via del Nazareno, and represented on a coin, see the aureus below.
