Samos Eupalinos

Behind the barrier

Nowadays after some 150 m the public part of the Eupalinos tunnel comes to an end. This photo gives an idea (View towards the entrance) about the tunnel behind the iron bars. About some 450 m from the S entrance one finds remains from the early Christian period. In winter water seeping through the roof here causes extensive flooding, making this part of the tunnel impassable. Here there are a number of thin white marble slabs and columns of different thicknesses and shapes. One slab was embellished with ornamentation much like the reliefs found in Byzantine churches. It is possible that the slabs were brought in to make a small shrine incorporating a water basin, supplied by the water that runs down the walls of the tunnel. Possible the water was credited with miraculous properties photo Torben Bolhøj
