Channel below the doorway

Interior of the Casa de Aqua, looking downstream. The channel below the doorway marks the exit of the aqueduct from the settling basin. The channel at left - with a small weir, towards a filtering bulb - may have served to separate floating dirt from the surface of the water, and to act as an overflow in case of high water levels in the conduit. The Roman conduit was twice as wide as the present one.
