Inside El Caseron

Interior of El Caseron. Its alternative name: desarenador (sand trap) de San Gabriel, looking
downstream. The channel below the doorway marks the exit of the aqueduct from the settling
basin. The channel at left - with a small weir, towards a filtering bulb - may have served to
separate floating dirt from the surface of the water, and to act as an overflow or supply (to a
fountain?) in case of high water levels in the conduit. The Roman conduit was twice as wide as
the present one.
